May 3 Sale Will Feature Property from the Estate of Margaret Sheffield Martin

Hindman today announced the inaugural sale for its new Atlanta office, featuring fine art, furniture and decorative arts from prominent estates and collectors, including the Estate of Margaret Sheffield Martin. The auction, featuring 320 lots, will take place on Friday, May 3 at 10AM (ET) at the Hindman galleries located at 668 Miami Circle NE, Atlanta. The public exhibition will be held Friday, April 26 through Thursday, May 2 from 12pm-5pm daily.

In addition to establishing a visible presence in the the vital Atlanta arts community, Hindman is particularly pleased to have been chosen to offer property from the Estate of Margaret Sheffield Martin at auction. Mrs. Martin lived a life of devotion to her family and service to her community, holding leadership roles in the Piedmont Hospital Women’s Auxiliary and the Junior League of Atlanta. She served on the alumni board of Sweet Briar College, was an Emeritus Trustee of The Westminster Schools and a past President and Chair Emeritus of the Board of Trustees of the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Her vision, leadership and persistence served to grow these and many other organizations, as well as mentor many leaders who followed in her footsteps.

Mrs. Martin was also a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames in America, Atlanta Town Committee, member and past president of Peachtree Garden Club and a member of the Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta. She was a former member of Peachtree Golf Club in Atlanta and Highlands Country Club in Highlands, North Carolina.

Mrs. Martin favored classic traditional design, focusing her collecting on English and American late 18th century antiques. Over one hundred thirteen lots will be offered from her collection, including furniture and decorative arts, silver, Chinese Export ceramics, paintings and prints.

Highlights include a George III Silver Epergne by Thomas Pitts, London, 1787 (estimate $6,000-9,000); a brass-mounted Chinese Export blue and white porcelain tea urn, late 18th century (estimate $1,500-2,500), an imposing George III mahogany secretary bookcase (estimate $3,000-5,000), and a painting entitled Le Salon de Musique, painted in the manner of Antoine Vestier (French, 1740-1824).

The auction continues with impressive offerings from collections, estates and various owners, including a comprehensive selection of English furniture and decorative arts from a San Antonio, Texas collection as well as from an Atlanta private collector, and European furniture and decorative arts from the collection of M. Anthony Greene. Of special interest will be an extensive Tiffany silver flatware service in the English King pattern from the estate of Martin Erdmann, New York (estimate $8,000-12,000), an amusing Meissen porcelain monkey band (estimate $6,000-9,000), a fine and large Louis Philippe Aubusson carpet (estimate $7,000-10,000) and a fine Chippendale mahogany chest of drawers, Pennsylvania, circa 1770 (estimate $5,000-8,000).
